Mint Chip

I am more selective about my post titles these days.  As a blogger trying to get my name out there I use words that I know are highly searched on Google and will direct traffic to my site.  For example, I am confident you came across this post because you were searching for tasty images of mint chocolate chip ice cream. Instead I have masterfully tricked Google into tricking you to read all about a mint green mesh knit sweater and shorts by ALEXANDER WANG that I saw on the the Shopbop Hit List and how it has led to my growing affection for MINT GREEN.  I admit this logic seems a bit hasty but don't give up on me yet, somewhere in there is potential.

A sucker for bold brights I never thought a pastel color could have the same effect yet there is something about this tone-on-tone look that is similarly energetic and refreshing. I suppose that's why it's a choice color for hospitals and OR scrubs. O, R they? (Rushmore quotes anyone?).  I'm sure the image of hospitals and scrubs are not the kind of thoughts Alexandre Herchcovitch, Badgley Mischka, or Christopher Kane were trying to envoke for Spring 2011 even though I have to say that a certain Prada's menswear look comes awfully close. No worries my male counterparts, everyone loves a well dressed nurse! So instead of bad hospital memories let your mind traipses elsewhere and consider this color for your spring wardrobe.  I think with my stomach so you know what I'll be thinking about....

I thrifted this V-Neck knit mint green top at Goodwill this weekend.  It was actually a part of a set, skirt and top. I'm regretting not picking up the skirt so hopefully no one reads this post before I get back to the store!  *crossing fingers* It's such an unflattering boxy top that I think my only resolution is to turn it into a crop top and pair it with crisp white high-waisted trousers and neutral heels.

Thrift Remix: Miu Miu Spring 2011

I rarely go to the thrift store with an exact outfit in mind, it wouldn't be fair to my creative spirit.  I do keep in mind what colors, textures, patterns and styles inspire me from the current season.  Following the Fall 2011 collections at New York Fashion Week makes me think about wanting to change my current wardrobe state, so with my penchant for playing dress-up I've been re-energized to make new use of pieces I already own but hardly wear.

Wardrobe boredom is one of the reasons I love to check out the runways - the place where designers make and break the rules before it gets dissected into trends.  I find freedom in the idea that on the runway anything goes, because well, why not? I suppose that's why designers are designers because they challenge the idea of what's possible, and so personal style must only develop through trial and error.

I thrifted this burgandy silk A-line dress by Susana Monaco, neon green leather clutch, sheer boxy peplum top (last seen here), and boxy leather biker jacket on separate occasions never thinking they would meet outside of my cramped closet.  It was the Spring 2011 Miu Miu collection that convinced me it might not be a terrible idea.

Even though this Spring collection is not as strong as it's sister line Prada, what I find most appealing is the contrast in proportion and fit juxtaposed with hard and soft lines. A negative review of the collection (hilariously titled Off The Deep End With Arty Crap Collection) said "the only problem is, I don`t think I could actually wear it. In fact, I can`t even imagine anyone I know wearing this outfit."  Oh well, trial and error. It's pretty clear I've got some metallic applique work to do to this leather jacket...

Red Leather Valentine

I thought it was nearly impossible to thrift skinny leg black leather pants.  Everytime I found a pair they fit like highwasited mom jeans from the 90s. If you can pull off this style, congratulations. If you are in the other 99% of the population that can't, then you should understand this dilemma. Well one sunny wonderful day (I don't remember if it was actually sunny but that sounds nice) I spotted a pair of Donald J. Pliner leather pants at Goodwill for $5.99.  I think it might have been a price error but who am I to complain? Not only were they skinny leg and in my size, but they were red. Red leather pants? Hell yes!

I had no idea what I was going to do with these newly discovered beauties but I figured my trusty fashion-sidekick Google.com would give me some ideas.  I stumbled upon the Isabel Marant and Balmain Fall 2010 collections featuring black pointy toe pumps (check) and black leather jackets (check).  Things were starting to come together.  Then I saw a look from the Bottega Veneta Fall 2010 RTW and realized how romantic and wearable these pants could be and I was sold.  It also didn't hurt to have a little extra style confirmation of their appeal from the sweedish blogger and my designer-closet-daydream lookbook Caroline's Mode.

Well seeing as it's Valentine's day I think it's an appropriate time to showcase my buns get romantic. Wait, there is a very clear shot of my rear. Prepare yourself.  Even more in the spirit of LOVE I took something that makes me happy and sprinkled it with lots of red, pink, and a little rock n' roll. Isn't that what cupid would do?

Goodwill Huntingg Challenge - Moschino

Taking Cues from Jason Wu + Snakeprint

My scarf collection hasn't been getting much love these days. I tend to stash away silk or lighter fabric "summer scarves" as if they have no use any other time.  I thrifted this funky geometric snake print skinny silk scarf that is long overdue for some outfit lovin.  Jason Wu's Spring 2011 collection - everything from the giant bows, clean lines, and sheer collared shirts - was just the inspiration I needed to whip it out.

I've longtime been a fan of "menswear" for women whether its a tailored suit, trouser pants, bow tie, or top hat. During one of my classic giant thrift hauls I spotted this military inspired blazer by Vanessa Bruno founder of the french fashion house Emanuelle Khan.  I'm still in awe of owning this beautifully tailored piece in perfect condition and the most classic shade of grey wool. 

I paired the scarf and blazer with one of my (Style.) staples this winter, a black sheer button up dress with silk collar by Jonathan Saunders for Target. The silk ribbon detail runs up the center, across the belt-line, and on the cuffs. It looks professional for day and goth school-girl for night...the much needed combo that every girl tries to pull off...right?

Can't wait to lighten the look for spring and work it with my snake print blouse (last seen here) and newly thrifted white trousers via Spring 2011 snake print inspiration Thakoon, Derek Lam, Roberto Cavalli, and Lanvin Resort 2011 collection. Guess I'll have to save that outfit for another post...

There was something extremely gaggish about the Moschino Spring 2011 collection that lead to its appeal.  An over-the-top collection of red/white/navy that you just have to swallow, keep moving, and hope the fourth of july police don't catch you stealing jello from your neighbors backyard pool party.  Don't let my sinicism kill your enthusiasm for stealing jello,  I was secretly enchanted by the thoughfulness of polka dots and stripes at play, two major trends to grace the runways from Marc Jacobs to Balenciaga.

I thrifted this entire outfit for less than $15 all in one haul from Goodwill - shoes, shirt, pants at $3.99 each. The wedges are Banana Republic and in brand new condition.  I think Im going to change out the skinny white laces for some thick stripe ribbon to get the full effect.  Moschino's giant drop Fleur de Lis earrings are just the right segue to introduce my new giant drop tortoise earrings by Angela Caputi.  These are the only things I paid full price.  I channeled the red/white polka dot turband with my thrifted red/white chain link Olivia Rosselli Roma silk scarf. The top is Nicola Petites and the high waisted trousers give my butt the illusion of a constant wedgie (fear not I do not actually have one).

Shoes Shirt Pants

When I went home I scored an entire coordinating Spring 2011 outfit in one Goodwill haul.  Three pieces at $3.99 respectively: shoes, shirt, and pants.  This is the proof - I kid you not this happened! Turns out my mom had even thrifted a coordinating bangle that was identical to a bangle I already own.  Like mother like daughter? 100% thrifted outift post to follow soon!

Just a few of my favorite things about going home!

I stole this orange-cream 100% wool jacket from my mom's closet for the weekend.  I picked it up for her at Goodwill last year and forgot how much I loved it...seems to be an on-going theme in my posts these days. The cut of the jacket reminds me of an old Ivan Grundahl piece, simple and functional yet interesting. Don't be fooled by how thin it is that sucker is WARM!  

I've been completely color-inspired since seeing all of the strong solid color-blocking knock out wimpy spring pastels at  Jil Sander's Spring 2011 presentation for Milan Fashion Week and have now convinced myself that the sooner I start wearing Spring colors the sooner the warm weather will start. I'm ok with having a Field-of-Dreams-attitude if you are ("if you build it they will come")? Anywho, the color of my jacket reminds me of eating Orangesicles in the summer and could most fittingly be the love-child of Coral Rose + Beeswax from Pantone's Spring 2011 Women's Fashion Colors.  I wore it with borrowed skinny cargos, borrowed purple sweater, thrifted pea-soup scarf, and my trusty thrifted lace-up Steve Madden NY boots that remind me of Nicholas Kirkwood for Erdem Fall 2010.

Who says winter has to be dull?
